The South Teton, one of the famous "Trois Tetons" of 19th century history, is the fifth highest peak in the Teton Range. Although the South Teton is not easily visible from Jackson Hole, it is prominent from Teton Basin to the west. It is one of the easiest of the major summits to reach and in the early days was frequently climbed. The "regular route" is the Northwest Couloir and is approached from the South Fork of Garnet Canyon. It begins in the saddle between the Middle Teton and the South Teton.
